In this read, we will experience a beautiful destination popularly known as Bhavali Dam, amidst the hills of Igatpuri, a small hilly area near Nashik city. The place is known for its beautiful backwaters of Bhavali Dam, which is built on the Darna River, and the beauty is increased due to a naturally formed waterfall lying exactly opposite the lakeside. The waterfall is highly active and beautiful only during monsoon season, supported by the ample waterfall in the area. Due a well built road that crosses the spot, the area is easily accessed by many visitors and is quite popular as a single day tourism spot for Nashikkars.

Things to Explore

1. Bhavali Dam: It is an earth fill dam developed on the Darna River. Though restricted for open tourism, visitors tends to drive upto the construction for some wonderful clicks. As a warning, Precaution is required during monsoon, as water overflows from the construction.

 

2. Bhavali Dam Backwaters

A more seasoned tourist spot, which is easily connected by road. The location is a real beauty as the lake is surrounded by hills. The place is good to visit throughout the year. There are good spots on the road that offers a good sunset view, as the sun hides behind the hills.

3. Bhavali Waterfalls 

This is naturally formed, two tier fall which gets into full flow during monsoon when the rainfall is heavy and water erosion is high. This place is suggested for visit only during rainfall. Adventure seekers can climb around the fall to reach the top of the flow. The villagers places food stalls near the place to serve the visitors with snack items. If you drive few meters ahead, there is another free falling waterfall, which is also a beautiful spot.

 

How to Reach

The place is easily accessible by road from nearby cities of Nashik, which is around 50km and Mumbai, which is 180km. The nearest rail-head is Igatpuri, which is 11 km from the spot or Nashik Road railway station at 56km. The nearest airport is Ojhar Airport, Nashik but major connectivity can be obtained from Mumbai. 

 

 

Where to Stay

The place comes under Igatpuri, which is an important tour destination, so offers many good stay options. For family visit, It is suggested to stay near the Mumbai highway, so you will have access to all essential needs. If you are seeking stays amidst nature, a few home stays, farm stays and resorts have recently cropped up near the spot like Grand Gardens, Touchwood Bliss which are quite a lavish construction. Please pre-book your stay and confirm the charges on call to avoid discomfort.

If you appreciate your motherland, then you will find beauty in many romantic aspects of our country, and hills have always been a target of many tourists that finds these places a facet of romantic escapes. In India, impressive mountainous destinations are recognized in Himalayas, the Vindhychals, the Aravalis, the coastal ghats and many other destinations. 

 

Let's walk into the Blue mountains ... 

Udagamandalam or Ooty is one of the most beautiful hill station in our country. It is located in Nilgiri Hills of Western Ghats in the state of Tamil Nadu. The hills are known for their local tribes the "Toda", whose settlements and villages are still in existence. It is one of the most famed summer destination from British times. The word Nilgiri means "Blue Mountains", and is the name given because of the seasonal blooms of the "Neelakurunji" flowers, which beautifies the valley every 12 years. Ooty is also famous for its fantastic Tea estates and Nilgiri Tea is accepted internationally for its fragrance and aromatic feel. The hills are also famous for UNESCO World heritage railways, "Nilgiri Mountain Railways".

I. Lakes around the area:

 

1. Ooty Lake:

The one image from Ooty that is most seen in travelogues, movies, and visited by almost everyone in Ooty is the Ooty Lake. It is beautiful lake covering 65 acres, famous for boating and is developed with all travel comfort like gardens, children park, food stalls etc. It gets extremely crowded during seasons. The place was initially developed by John Sullivan in 1824.

2. Pykara Falls and Lake: 

Pykara is a sacred river for the Todas, which is a local tribe of Nilgiri hills. It originates in the Murkurti area and travels through gaps and valleys. It forms two falls of 55m and 61m. The place is around 21 km from Ooty town.  The river is dammed and the reservoir formed is well developed as boating spot.

3. Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake is located in the silent valley area,about 25 km from the Ooty. The lake is important tourist and picnic spot in the region.The lake is famous for variety of fishes and birds, and notable for the scenic sun rise and sun set views.

4. Avalanche Lake

Avalanche Lake is located 28km from Ooty. It is said that the area got formed due to a landslide in 1800's. The area is famous for orchids, and other flowering landscape and Trout fishing.

5. Kamraj Sagar Dam and Sandynalla Lake

It is located 10km from Ooty. It is a favorite for the tourists and a wonderful picnic spot. An ideal place to go and chill with your family, it is often frequented by a lot of bird watchers.

II. Valleys and Gardens

 

1. Ooty Botanical Garden

Established in 1848, the garden with terrace type layout is developed on the slopes of Dodabetta Hill. It is one of the most popular spots for tourists. Many unique tree species are available here, with most popular attraction is the Fossil Tree Trunk that is said to be around 20 million years old.

2. Deer Park

A beautiful garden by the lake which has a lot of caged and semi-caged Deers. The visitors can walk around the area and have a playful time with deers, but should be done with respect.

3. Ooty Rose Garden

Established in 1995, The Government Rose Garden is situated on the slopes of the Elk Hill at an altitude of 2200 meters. The flowers are arranged in five curving terraces covering four hectares. It has large collection of roses.

4. Wenlock Downs 9th Mile Shooting Point.

The meadows offers excellent views for the visitors. The place is open during day time, with a small entry fee. Many activities are available for visitors, like hiking, horse riding. The location was a hunting site during British rule.

5. Dodabetta Peak and View Point

The name signifies "Big Mountain" in local Badaga language. There are 24 main peaks in the Nilgiris, whereas Doddabetta is the highest peak at a height of 2637 meters. The summit area is flat, allowing travelers to sit and enjoy the relaxing ambience and nature’s green gift. Tourists move up to the summit to enjoy the inspiring sunrise and sunset.Visitors can avail use of telescopes in the Telescope House maintained by Tourism Development since 18 June 1983 to gaze over the ideal town of Ooty.

III. Heritage Buildings

 

1. St. Stephan Church
The building was established in 1830, with beautiful stained-glass windows, depicting beautiful painting representing the scenes of the Last Supper.

2. Ooty Stone House

It is said to be the first construction in Ooty valley, by John Sullivan in 1822. The locals used to term it as Kal Bungalow. The land was purchased from Toda tribes. It has an antique and ghostly feel, which stones which are dark, but the structure is intact. There are many stuffed skins and models of animals hunted by Sullivan.

3. The Post Office, Ooty

In 1826, postal services got started in Ooty. The services were carried on Government bungalow, Ooty until 1833 when the services were shifted to Mount Road. The office that houses the Head Post office of Ooty is identified as a heritage building and can be seen in picture below. This office serves as collection centre for other seven branches of the area.

There are many other colonial building, heritage houses, colonial style guest houses that beautifies the whole city of Ooty and gives it an old British lookout feels.

 

Experiences in Ooty

 

1. Nilgiri Mountain Railways

The romance of Nilgiri toy train started in 1899, and it has been in the hearts of visitors ever since. This quaint journey was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005.  It covers a distance of 46 km in 5 hours. It chugs from Mettupalayam, drives along flat planes for 5km initially, then ascends rapidly in the next 12 km to a height of 4,363 ft. It makes it way through dark and winding tunnels, sepia feel forests, gorgeous slopes. It crosses few charming locations like Kellar, Coonoor, Wellington, Lovedale, and finally makes its stop at Udhagamandalam. The lovely feel cannot be exxplained in words, but can only be experienced. The station of Ooty is itself a tourist spot with small museum, photography area and garden.

My Say: Just have a ride through Nilgiri Toy Train. You can skip the visit to city. No regret.

2. The Tea Factory and Tea Museum

The good portion of the Ooty and Conoor valley is covered with Tea plantation. Tea of Ooty is deliciously fragrant and exquisitely aromatic tea, with high tones of delicate floral and golden yellow liquor. The place will provide a lovely experience for Tea lovers. A visit to Tea Industry is recommended.  A Tea Factory and Museum is operated by many factory owners, and is a well managed tourist visit which engages the visitors to enjoy a walk amidst Tea plantations, experience the processing of Tea leaves, and can enjoy the Tea tasting opportunity at  Factory outlet.

How to reach

Ooty is a hill station which can be reached from either Tamil Nadu via the Coimbatore route of 85km or from Karnataka via the Mysore route of 125km. Wildlife lovers prefer the Mysore route as it takes you through Bandipur National park. Both Coimbatore and Mysore have good connectivity through railways and airways. 

If traveling from Coimbatore side, reach Mettupalayam, a suburban railway station in outer Coimbatore, which is the origin of  Nilgiri Mountain Railways. The journey costs Rs 145 (2nd Class) and Rs 470 (1st Class). Unreserved seats are available in some trains costing Rs 75. Do check the timetable when you are traveling.

Where to Stay

Ooty is a well developed hill station with numerous options of stays and resorts. Depending on your pocket capacity, you can have stays of Rs 1500 to sky limit. For better experience, book your stay a little outside the city which may cost Rs 3000 per night. Few good once like King's Cliff, Sterling Ooty Elk Hill, Woodberry are good but can cost you 4000-6000/- but well to do.

Who should Visit

No choices here, anyone can visit. A perfect family destination.

Number of Days

Ooty has lots of activities to experience. So, a minimum 2-day visit is required. But for a comfortable stay, 3-4 days can be planned which can include a day at nearby Coonoor. 

 

 

Hill stations offers a visitor with an escape plan, if you choose to accept it by giving you an opportunity to leave behind every thought, every moment of stress and let you indulge in a tranquil moment decorated amidst nature with a little salt from human architecture. Ooty is not a regular tourism destination. It is complex blend on natural escape, a lot of colonial setup, an urban outdoor in between high hills with all required facilities, making this place a suited spot for minds of all desires. If you have the courage to get it out of the hills, it can deliver you with plentiful options.

In this journey, I will take you to a secluded place, and will explore the beauties of this amazing area, which is devoid of proper mobile network as well.

 

Tondavali-Talashil is a beautiful coastal destination on the Konkan coast in western India, close to the popular tourist destination of Malvan, Maharashtra. The place is geographically a peninsular area formed by Gad River on eastern boundary and Arabian Sea on the western border. This place is for those tourists who can survive a day without their digital identity. You know what i mean !

Being less visited, the beaches are very clean and resides good amount of marine life, so the place is pilgrimage for wildlife lovers too. The area is known for shells lying on beaches and dolphins greeting you near your resort backyards. For bird lovers, the area is clean and green with densely forested areas, making it a suitable home for multiple bird species, but spotting the birds in forest needs patience. Sea side birds are easy to photograph. The place is paradise for travelers who want to replenish their senses amidst calmness. 

Things to Do 

1.  Wagheshwar Temple

A beautiful temple dedicated to Goddess Shakti. It is said that the complete village is looked after by the goddess. So, every person pays their respect to the power and wish for well being of the people. Being a small village, every person here comforts each other as family member, so all festivals and celebrations are centered around this temple. Do visit while you enter the village.

2. Relaxing on Beach-side and if you are lucky, Dolphins may visit you near your couch

The area is famous for pristine beaches. Tondavali beach on the western part of peninsula is good for basic beach activities and most resorts have their own share of beach for visitors to access anytime. Most resorts provide night camping facility on their respective beach area. Many times group of Dolphins swim around the area during morning hours, and they come very close to the beaches which makes it easy for visitors to get a beautiful glimpse of these amazing creatures. In the evening, you can opt to sit near beach, spread your legs, have some tea and let all your stresses evaporate.

 3. Silent Boat ride on Gad River

The east side of peninsula is washed by Gad river giving it a more silent lookout. You can hire a boat with the help of your resort owners as most residents have their own boats which is basically used for small scale fishing. You can certainly enjoy the drive in the river with amazing bird sights, lush green surroundings, scenery of coconut palms. If that does not satisfy you, then just relax and feel the cool breeze over the river.

4. Talashel Beach and Amalgamation of Sea and River

The beach can be accessed either by a difficult walk through coconut palm jungle or by a river ride through boats. The beach witness the merging of Gad river and Arabian sea. You can witness lot of marine life in this area.

5. Boat ride to Simpla Island and Kawada Rock Island

You can have a boat ride to the Simpla Island which basically looks like a graveyard with shells all around. Going a bit deeper into sea, you will reach Kawada Rock Island. You can land on the island for some clicks. You will feel completely isolated.

6. Walk through the homes of Locals 

The visit to the area will not be complete if you don't communicate with the locals. Have a candid talk with the boat driver, your caretaker at resort and he will open up a beautiful picture of the area. If you can connect with them, they will take you around their home and you can explore their culture in a deeper ways. 

During my visit, I got the chance to interact with a craftsman who was making decorative artifacts using sea shells collected from the area. The shells were collected from small islands around the area and they sell them in Malvan markets. 

7. Have some fishing experience

The place can offer you variety in fishing experience. You can have your fishing time at Gad river, or you may experience the fishing net collection procedures during evening hours on the Tondavali beach. Now it is upto you, how you want to have this fun.

8. Get to Taste Home made Konkan food

There are no hotels in the area. You will be served with lovely tasty food with great love and care. Like most households, the food is cooked by the lady of the house and that shows you why the simple food tastes so much. Another lovely affair is that there are no menu cards here. Like your home, the host will discuss the food arrangements with you based on available eatables and fishes well in advance, that is, your breakfast and lunch will be discussed during previous night dinner. After a proper discussion, required fresh raw materials are brought home so that the home-maker can cook them for you. Again, if you can connect with them, you can share a space in their kitchen to witness the home style cooking.

Sarjekot Jetty has many service providers who offers you an option to have all sea sports activity like Sea Sailing, Para-gliding, different boat rides, and special activity like Scuba diving. But I would suggest all to experience all this in Malvan or Tarkarli area. 

How to Reach

The nearest railway station is Kankavali, which is 40 Km away on the Konkan Railways which is very well connected to various parts of India via Mumbai. The other option is Kudal, which is 46 Km away, but it has less trains with scheduled stops. For Airways lovers, Sindhudurg Chipi Airport may get operational soon for domestic flights from Mumbai. The nearest International airport is Dabolin, Goa, which is 145  Km away. Do hire a cab while visiting Tondavali because there is no facility of public transport there.

Where to Stay

There are many home-stay type options around the beach area. Most resorts are of similar levels. I opted for Redstone Resort. It has options for small 1 room setup and beach side camps. It has a in-house kitchen, a music area where you can enjoy at night playing your own music using blue-tooth music systems. If you are interested in bird photography, book the resort on the river sides as birds can be seen having their flights on rivers but you will miss the beach stay charms.

After a long week, may be a long month or may be a long year at work, a middle class family collects the finances and time to plan a happy loving travel week for a time together. But if you look around India, there are many amazing options to select from, but there is one majestic option that takes you up-close with rare and mind-blowing living beings with whom you are sharing this planet and thanks to the collection of many developed national parks and sanctuaries in India, anyone can opt for a trip to the wilderness.

India is the land of many exotic species of flora and fauna, and the two most sought after species for which the whole world comes to India are "The Royal Bengal Tiger" and the "Asiatic Lion". In India, there are multiple protected forest which are home to some fantastic wildlife which are rare, endangered and extremely magnificent. Like the Tigers, which is given government protection as the "National Animal of India" and protected through Project Tiger Initiative under which many sanctuaries are created. The other jewel of India, is The Asiatic Lion, but sadly, in the whole world, there is only one place where you can find them walking freely in the wild.  These are extremely beautiful but critically endangered species which needs the support of the government and citizens equally.

Gir National Park, the only home of the magnificent Asiatic Lion, is a protected forest at Junagarh, Gujarat. The area is a dry deciduous forest, scrub-land drained by small river streams which makes it well suited as a Lion habitat. The sanctuary was established at 1965 with a park area of 1412 sq.km. Sasan Gir is the perfect destination for wildlife lovers and a very well managed park which suits the liking of children and adults alike. The area has dense Lion population so the chances of Lion sighting is always high but always not compulsory. As per census, in year 2020, the lion population is estimated to be 674. But due to habitat shrinkage, Lions are loosing their home and faces threats from human population living around the forest.

Things to Experience

1. Jungle Safari in Core Forest

A jungle safari is the most sought after adventure sightseeing activity that should be done in Gir to witness the wildlife treasures of India. The activity is a 3 Hr drive through designated drive routes. In total, there are 13 routes, out of which one will be allotted to you from permit office along with a Jeep with driver and guide. The whole activity will cost you Rs 4300 for Indian citizens. Each permit allows maximum 6 visitors. Always book your permit well before your visit to Gir, through online process (link below) and please respect nature, wildlife and please follow the rules of the sanctuary.

2. Devalia National Park

An earmarked area within the park, with the motive of a Tourist Interpretation Center, which is designed as a tourist area for assured Lion and other wildlife sighting at a cheaper cost. The park remained closed on Wednesdays. The park services open at 7-11am in morning while in the evening it opens at 3 - 6 pm. The charges are quite nominal, if you are visiting by bus which is around Rs 150 - 190 as per season. If you want a private gypsy, you can book permit  online using links below. Gypsy and guide charges can cost you around Rs 1900 i.e. Rs 1500 for gypsy and Rs 400 for guide.

3. Bird Tours

The national park is also home to many different species of birds, and it is a beautiful site of bird photographers. But you may have to spend days to have a good documentation done. A jungle safari in the morning is a better option for bird lovers. Many water bodies are present in the park which are good spots for bird spotting.

4. Crocodile Sightings at Kamleshwar Dam 

Gir is used as a Crocodile conservation zone for Mugger Crocodiles which are found in good numbers in lakes and river areas. Kamleshwar dam is a beautiful spot within the park and every jungle ride stops by this area.

Safari booking is open for all days of the year except for days during monsoon times i.e. from 16th June till 15th October every year due to weather condition. Permit is issued 3hrs before the safari timing, using the printed receipt of online booking and government ID cards.

Wildlife Sightings

Along with Asiatic Lions, the area also habits many carnivores like Indian leopard, Striped Hyena, Bengal Fox, and some species of Wild cats. The attractive herbivores are Nilgai, Sambar, Four-horned Antelope, Chinkara. Reptiles like Mugger Crocodiles are present in water bodies in Gir, along with Cobra, Monitor lizard, Rock Pythons. Many exotic bird species like Peacocks, Crested serpent Eagle, Changeable hawk-Eagle, Brown Fish Owl, Pygmy woodpecker, Black-headed oriole and many more can be seen.

How to Reach

There are two rail heads by which you can reach Gir. Firstly, Junagarh, which is 76km from Gir, which is well connected to many cities of India via Ahmadabad. But my vote goes to Somnath or Veraval Railway Station, which is around the same distance from Gir but you can visit Somnath Temple as an additional trip. Remember, for the early morning ride, a stay at Gir is recommended. The nearest busy airport is Rajkot, which is 100km from Gir.

Where to Stay

There are many jungle lodges and resorts available around the area, which can be selected for a stay. Gir Jungle Lodge is one name worth mentioning. You can have cheaper stay arrangements at Somnath or Junagarh which is close to Gir, but you may miss the early morning safari, which is best suited for Lion sightings.

Who should Visit

It is only for Wildlife lovers. All parents are requested to give wildlife exposure to their kids so that they are made aware about Indian wildlife heritage and develop a sympathy and love towards these beautiful beings. 

Number of Days

1 day visit for general visitors, where you can opt for Devalia Tour so that you can guarantee Lion experience. Wildlife enthusiast can book at-least 1 deep safari ride. For wildlife worms, at-least 3 safari are suggested by wildlife experts. But it will be costly.

Visit Tips:

The best time to visit it is between December and March. Although it is very hot in April and May, these are the best months for wildlife photography, as lions tends to accumulate near water ponds, where hunting activities can be recorded and sighting is more probable.

If you are visiting any national park for a sight of only one species, then you will miss to experience the sighting of many beautiful wildlife that the forest has to offer. So be open, be ready to experience all the friends of Mother Nature. 

To conclude, I will reiterate one statement that everyone should make their kids aware of nature and wildlife. Visiting national parks and sanctuaries serves dual purpose. Firstly, your child gets a first hand experience of wildlife and its importance, so they develop an early love for them. Also, it is the source of income for many forest guides and workers who serves as forest caretakers and helps in keeping the forest and its residents healthy. Imagine, if wildlife tourism stops giving income to these people, who are mainly local residents, they may start exploiting the forest for livelihood, resulting in damage to Lion habitat that may lead to their extinction. So, this small visit may go a long way in protecting these amazing wildlife species, which directly protects these beautiful forests, and most importantly, which directly helps in the survival of Mankind.
