Southern Tip of Indian Mainland - Kanyakumari

Monuments at the tip of India

The mind of a traveler is a multi-disciplinary brain who learns history to understand the culture of a place. It learns Geography to appreciate the natural aspects of the region. It also learns Biology, to understand the regional growth and wildlife of the area. A traveler finds joy in every aspect of a place and appreciate all attributes the place has to offer. This open mindedness also plays a healthy role in life lessons as well.

In this journey, I will take you to a place at the very end of Indian mainland, which is a well known topic of many historical stories, site of pilgrimage and a very unique geological situation.

Welcome to Kanyakumari !

Kanyakumari or Cape Comorin, belongs to the state of Tamil Nadu, is significantly termed as "The Land's End" and is positioned as the "Southern-most Town of India". The place is considered heaven for beach lovers, a place of pilgrimage for Hindus and a historical treat. The geological significance is the merging of three oceanic bodies of Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal, and Arabian Sea. Historically, this area was ruled by many south indian hindu rulers, like the Cholas, the Pandyas, the Cheras and others. The place also witnessed Dutch rule during colonial times before British occupancy. The demo-graphical aspect shows that the people here follow Hindu culture. Islamic beliefs reached the area through Arab traders who were involved in Spice trades across this area. Christianity too is quite dominant in this area with St. Francis stepping in India through Kanyakumari, with estimate of around 45% of city population spread.

Places to Visit

The few famous tourist spots of Kanyakumari town area are as scripted below:

1. Vivekananda Rock Memorial

A huge marvelous architectural structure build on a huge rock, 500m from the shoreline dedicated to nation in the year 1970. The memorial spreads the life and words of Swami Vivekananda. Ferry rides are available which carries tourists to the rock. There is a dark political and religious history during the planning of this structure, which even went into judicial battle. But after years of efforts, the construction of the memorial was done. Much of the funds for the construction was actually collected from nation-wide donation process launched by social activist, Eknath Ranade, who was involved with Rashtrya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and was a disciplined follower of the teachings of Swami Vivekananda.

 2. Statue of Thiruvalluvar

A 95 feets statue of famous Tamil poet "Maharshi Thiruvalluvar", which is placed on a base which is around 38 feet in height, which is placed on a rock. The total height of the setup is 133 feets, denoting the 133 chapters of Tirukural. The base of 38 feets height represents 38 chapters of Virtue, and the statue represents Wealth and Love. The statue is beautifully carved by sculpture artist, Vaidyanatha Ganapati Sthapati, and was dedicated to nation on 1 January, 2000. The statue can be visited by ferry rides and tourist can reach upto the feet of the statue.

3. Devi Kanyakumari Temple

Bhagavathi Amman Temple or Devi Kanyakumari Temple is a beautiful coastal temple, which is considered as one of the 108 Shakti Peethas constructed in dedication to Goddess Parvati. The temple is considered 3000 years old, and it presents mesmerizing coastal lookouts.

4. Gandhi Memorial Mandapan

The structure is constructed in 1956 using Odisha Architecture style to honor the grace of Mahatma Gandhi. After his demise in 1948, the ashes were carried to different parts of the country, and one was brought to Kanyakumari, and was kept at this place for people to pay their last homage. A memorial was constructed around this site, and now it is visited by tourist to witness various different angles of life of Mahatma Gandhi. The place is open for visitors from 7am to 7pm.

5. Kanyakumari Beach

A beautiful evening spot where you can spend your time to relax and have a peaceful time. The beach is properly developed with required amenities, food stalls and other stores. If you focus properly on the gushing waters, you can see three colors of three oceans as they don't mix directly, so layers of water having deep blue, Sea Green and Turquoise Blue colors can be seen. This mixing is better visualized from Vivekananda Memorial.

A beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma but uniquely here, all the three deities are presented in the form of a "Lingam". This architectural beauty has huge gopurams (entrance) with one having 144 feets. A must visit for religious and architecture enthusiasts, and it is around 12 km outer of Kanyakumari.

A Important Non-Touristic Place is "Vivekananda Kendra", which is a spiritual and cultural center of learning, which is working in close association with Ramakrishna Mission and Rashtrya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). It was founded in 1972 by activist, Eknath Ranade.

How to Reach

As always, my preferred mode is Indian Railways and Kanyakumari has its own railway station with good connectivity with most Indian cities. Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Express and Jammu-Kanyakumari Himsagar Express which are two of the longest running trains in India starts from here.  Nagarcoil is another nearby station at 20km, and has good road connectivity with Kanyakumari via state buses. The nearest airport is Trivendrum, which is 91km from here. A road drive from Trivendrum to Kanyakumari is enchanting due to the Kerala backdrop.

Where to Stay

Being a popular tourist destination, it has well developed stay options in all price ranges. It is recommended to have a sea facing options. The Gopinivas, Hotel Seaview are good options. It also has multi-state food options as it receives visitors from many states especially West Bengal, due to its connection with Swami Vivekananda. Many home style food joints are available for visitors from West Bengal.

A Portuguese Jewel - The Island of Diu

Remains of Portuguese History - Pani Kotha (Island Jail)

In India, it is said that with every next city, cultures get changed, food taste changes and you see a different way of living. This phenomenon is unique to Indian and we Indians are very proud of this multi-lingual, multi-cultural cocktail setup. History has witnessed invasions by many foreign cultures but the few noted once includes the English, Mughals, Parsis, French, and Portuguese. The impact of these cultures were so strong and long lasting that they are alive even today. These places provides the visitors with a unique travel experience showcasing different architecture, different food style and a different culture.

The Island of Diu, belongs to the union territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu. Many confuses Daman and Diu as close twin cities, but it is not. Daman is near Mumbai, whereas Diu is at the far west in Kathiwar peninsula, near Somnath, Gujarat. Historically, Diu was under control by Portuguese settlement from 1535 to 1961. On 19 December, 1961, military of independent India captured Diu island. As a tourist destination, Diu offers a wonderful colonial architectural experience, tit bits from colonial history and lovely coastal food. Diu has a uniqueness of lacking high rise buildings giving a beautiful equi-level city landscape and smooth skyline.

Places to See

War Memorials:

1. Diu Fort:
Diu fort is one of the most prominent Portuguese construction at the eastern coastal end of Diu island. It was constructed 1535 under Treaty of Bassein with ruler of Gujarat area. During the Indo-Pak war in 1971, the ship sank 40 nautical miles off the coast of Diu taking down with her a crew of 18 officers and 176 sailors ,when hit by 3 torpedo. This memorial marks to honor the souls lost in war.It has beautiful ship model and a sea facing amphitheater.

1.  St. Paul's Church
The church constructed completed in 1610, dedicated to Our lady of Immaculate Conceptions, and is still used by locals as a place of worship and the construction is still as it was in 1610. A beautiful colonial look gives this place a significant historical significance.

It is oldest constructed church of Diu which is dated to 1593. The building was utilized as a hospital. The exterior is reconstructed and repaired to give its original colonial look.

3. Gangeshwar Mahadev Temple
The beauty of the location is glorified by the fact that the Shivalings are placed at a cave type rock formation below sea level and are washed by sea waves continuously. It gives a beautiful outlook to the temple area. Visitors can walk down the shrine to witness this beauty. It is believed that the shivlings are placed by Pandavas from Mahabharat.

The best thing about Diu is that most tourist spots are open free to public and maintained quite nicely. The typical opening time is 8am to 6pm.

How to Reach
The most preferred way to reach Diu is by railways. You can reach Somnath from anywhere in India via Ahmadabad. Diu can be reached by a small drive of 84km. The roads around the area is good. If you are a flight freak, then you can reach directly to Diu Airport from Mumbai only.

Where to Stay
A traveler can opt for stay options on coastal locations for a beautiful evening. A few resorts of fame are Radhika Beach Resort, Hotel Kohinoor etc. Another option is you can stay at nearby town of Somnath, and pay a day visit to this place as opted by me. A good place to have lunch is Apana Foodland, near fort area. It has great taste with good coastal scenes.

Who should Visit
Anyone can visit. It has happy spots for everyone.

No. of Days: 1 Day visit is sufficient

A colonial time fortified town entrance

--------------------------------

During your travel in India, you will come across many places that are small, not so famed but yet they will impress you with their calmness and pristine escape out places. Diu is one such location which has potentials of a great tourist spot, but I fear, if this place is developed as a famed tourist spot, then the place might loose the peaceful and colonial charm, which is presently the trademark of the town.

Happy Traveling !

Home of the Asiatic Lions - Sasan Gir

The Lioness and the kids (Pic - Mumbaitravllers)

After a long week, may be a long month or may be a long year at work, a middle class family collects the finances and time to plan a happy loving travel week for a time together. When you start thinking about your tour plan, you can be confronted with a question. Where should we go ? The brain normally gives us two common options, Let's go to a Beach destination or Let's climb up the hills. But if you look around India, there are many amazing options to select from, but there is one majestic option that takes you up-close with rare and mind-blowing living beings with whom you are sharing this planet and thanks to the collection of many developed national parks and sanctuaries in India, anyone can opt for a trip to the wilderness.

So, Welcome to the Jungles my friend !

India is the land of many exotic species of flora and fauna, and the two most sought after species for which the whole world comes to India are "The Royal Bengal Tiger" and the "Asiatic Lion". In India, there are multiple protected forest which are home to some fantastic wildlife which are rare, endangered and extremely magnificent. Like the Tigers, which is given government protection as the "National Animal of India" and protected through Project Tiger Initiative under which many sanctuaries are created. The other jewel of India, is The Asiatic Lion, but sadly, in the whole world, there is only one place where you can find them walking freely in the wild.  These are extremely beautiful but critically endangered species which needs the support of the government and citizens equally.

Gir National Park, the only home of the magnificent Asiatic Lion, is a protected forest at Junagarh, Gujarat. The area is a dry deciduous forest, scrub-land drained by small river streams which makes it well suited as a Lion habitat. The sanctuary was established at 1965 with a park area of 1412 sq.km. Sasan Gir is the perfect destination for wildlife lovers and a very well managed park which suits the liking of children and adults alike. The area has dense Lion population so the chances of Lion sighting is always high but always not compulsory. As per census, in year 2020, the lion population is estimated to be 674. But due to habitat shrinkage, Lions are loosing their home and faces threats from human population living around the forest.

The whole activity will cost you Rs 4300 for Indian citizens. Each permit allows maximum 6 visitors. Always book your permit well before your visit to Gir, through online process (link below) and please respect nature, wildlife and please follow the rules of the sanctuary.

How to Reach

There are two rail heads by which you can reach Gir. Firstly, Junagarh, which is 76km from Gir, which is well connected to many cities of India via Ahmadabad. But my vote goes to Somnath or Veraval Railway Station, which is around the same distance from Gir but you can visit Somnath Temple as an additional trip. Remember, for the early morning ride, a stay at Gir is recommended. The nearest busy airport is Rajkot, which is 100km from Gir.

Where to Stay

There are many jungle lodges and resorts available around the area, which can be selected for a stay. Gir Jungle Lodge is one name worth mentioning. You can have cheaper stay arrangements at Somnath or Junagarh which is close to Gir, but you may miss the early morning safari, which is best suited for Lion sightings.

Who should Visit

It is only for Wildlife lovers. All parents are requested to give wildlife exposure to their kids so that they are made aware about Indian wildlife heritage and develop a sympathy and love towards these beautiful beings.

Number of Days

1 day visit for general visitors, where you can opt for Devalia Tour so that you can guarantee Lion experience. Wildlife enthusiast can book at-least 1 deep safari ride. For wildlife worms, at-least 3 safari are suggested by wildlife experts. But it will be costly.

Visit Tips:

The best time to visit it is between December and March. Although it is very hot in April and May, these are the best months for wildlife photography, as lions tends to accumulate near water ponds, where hunting activities can be recorded and sighting is more probable.

----------------------

If you are visiting any national park for a sight of only one species, then you will miss to experience the sighting of many beautiful wildlife that the forest has to offer. So be open, be ready to experience all the friends of Mother Nature.

To conclude, I will reiterate one statement that everyone should make their kids aware of nature and wildlife. Visiting national parks and sanctuaries serves dual purpose. Firstly, your child gets a first hand experience of wildlife and its importance, so they develop an early love for them. Also, it is the source of income for many forest guides and workers who serves as forest caretakers and helps in keeping the forest and its residents healthy. Imagine, if wildlife tourism stops giving income to these people, who are mainly local residents, they may start exploiting the forest for livelihood, resulting in damage to Lion habitat that may lead to their extinction. So, this small visit may go a long way in protecting these amazing wildlife species, which directly protects these beautiful forests, and most importantly, which directly helps in the survival of Mankind.

So, Happy Traveling and be grateful to Mother Nature !

Dawn of Indian Coffee - Chikkamagaluru

The idol of Chikkamaglur - Mother Earth at Siri Coffee

There are some lovely incidents that happened in the history of India, and the some of the most interesting stories are linked with the culinary history of that country. Thankfully, India is a country that offers a different heritage and culinary culture in every district, ranging from different food choices, different preparations, varied spices and much more. However, this story is for all those people who gets their energy for work from a very special drink that traveled from a distant country and now it is flowing in the veins of many.

You might have guessed it right ....

This story is about Coffee, its journey to India and the traveling around.

Chikkamagaluru is a beautiful hill station lying in southern Karnataka. It is said that, coffee came to India from Yamen around 1600 AD, and it was the first coffee plantation in India. The roots of well known cafe chain, Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) grows from Chikkamagaluru. The cultivation got its spreads to other south Indian mountains in times to come. The place has a nicely developed base town which serves as the district capital. The part of the district that attracts travelers is the mountainous region of western ghats which provide every visitors with a green escape and a walk through amazing coffee plantations. The place offers a nice package of activities that a visitor can do.

Serene Valley of Chikkamagaluru

Let us have a walk through with this place.

1. Baba Budangiri Peak:

At a height of 1895m, this place got is name from sufi saint "Baba Budan". Who is he ? Wait and watch. The hill is a place of devotion for both Hindus and Muslims equally.  Both the shrine of Baba Budan and temple of Dattatray are placed close to each other. Though this place was part of religious fights, but believe me, this place has blessing for every human being, the blessings of nature. Depending on the season you visit, the landscape will vary, the volume of waterfalls around will differ. This place receives heavy rainfalls during seasons.

2. Mullayangiri Hills

At a height of 1930m, this is the highest point of Karnataka. It is a grassy trekking destination. You can drive upto certain height, but the later section is only for trekking enthusiasts. Post monsoon, the place can give you amazing experience. At the top, there is a small shrine of "Mulapa Swamy", a sage who meditated at that height. Chikkamagaluru also has a railway station but few trains ply through it. So, if you are traveling from far of places, I will suggest you to reach either Mangaluru or Hassan, and then enjoy the journey through a road trip.

Visit Schedule

For a family visit, post monsoon season, i.e. August to February is pretty good option. For trekkers, monsoon can give you a lot of adventure options.

Where to Stay

Being a well defined tourist destination, the place has a nice collection of stay options ranging from small stays, resorts, home stays, farm stays and others. Stay options are available in city area as well as on the hilly terrains. It is always suggested to opt for stay options on hills to enjoy the serenity of the destination. Also, i will suggest to pre-book the stay option while planning your journey. If you are using online booking portals like MMT, Oyo etc, do a cross confirm through call with the hotel person to confirm booking.

During my stay, I stayed at Greenwood Resort. While booking, it showed listed as an Oyo property, so we booked it through Oyo. Once at resort, it came to our notice that they don't accept Oyo bookings. But we continued our stay by paying the regular resort charges, which is INR 3000-4000 depending on type of room. But the stay was good.

Stories of Folklore

Many stories buzz around these mountains. One of them links with the start of Hoyshala Kingdom. It is said that, it was at Sosevur (presently Angadi), that King Sala, the founder of the Hoysala dynasty, killed the legendary tiger, which got immortalised in the Hoysala emblem and can be seen as a symbol of Hoyshalas in all its architechtures.

Another important story, tells you the origin of Coffee in India. It is said that coffee beans were planted at Chikmagaluru, by sufi saint, "Baba Budan" during 1670 AD. He went for pilgrimage to Mecca, while returing he traveled through the seaport of Mocha, Yemen where he came across coffee. He wrapped seven coffee beans around his belly and got them here in India and planted the beans in the hills of Chikmagalur, and the rest of the history is known to all.

A point of General Knowledge

1. Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) of Coffee Day Enterprise, is an internationally acclaimed cafe chain is based at Chikkamagaluru and they grow their coffee at their coffee estates, which is said to have a cover of 20000 Hectares. It was started by V.G. Siddhartha in year 1996. You can see the industry's roasting plant as you enter the area white traveling from Mangalore side.

2. In India, the two celebrated varieties of coffee are "Arabica" and "Robusta". Arabica is known for its mild strength and aromatic charm, so it is commercially more valuable. However, Robusta is known for its higher strength and so it suits making various blends. Arabica is grown in higher altitudes than Robusta. The cool temperature of 15-25 C, is suitable for Arabica while for Robusta needs hot and humid climate with temperature of 20-30 C. This information is available from Coffee Museum, Chikkamagalur.

A visit is not just site seeing, its an experience of the fine details of the place, its history, its culinary habits and every possible details. Then and then only, you can call yourself and explorer, and this habit enriches your mind and soul.

Happy Traveling !

The Citadel of Power - Chittorgarh

The massive Fort of Chittorgarh

Indian history has many stories of Heroics, Bravery, Patriotism, Faith and Love. The Rajputs of Rajasthan is well known for their strengths, valor and extreme dedication to their motherland, and to prove that there are many historical incidents recorded in time. Indian history has witnessed infinite moments where the result of war is so traumatic that their are no winners and losers. The only thing survived was massacre and bloodshed. Our history is about stories of bravery and sacrifice. So to end this visit, I will recite two well known happening related to Chittorgarh.

Panna Dai and her Sacrifice:
The story of Panna Dai's sacrifice dates to the time of Maharana Uday Singh II ( father of Maharana Pratap). Panna Dai was in-charge of well being of infant Uday Singh II. Due to uncertain political issues, and disorder caused the then ruler, Vikramaditya II, he was arrested and Bhanbir, distant cousin of Uday singh was appointed as ruler of Mewar. But he acted against all, to declare him as the original king of Mewar. To achieve this he killed every possible competitor. When he was going to murder infant Uday Singh II, Panna Dai exchanged him with her own son and with the help of trusted maids, she safely shifted Uday Singh II to Kumhalgarh area. The saddest thing, while her son was brutally murdered by Bhanbir, she stood their watching the incident.

Mass Self-Immolation by Rajput Women
Indian history has seen many cases of Jauhar, where royal queen with group of other women commit suicide by walking into flames. As said by historians, Chittorgarh witnessed two of the biggest Jauhar incidents. The first one by Rani Padmini, when the reigning Rana Ratan Singh faced defeat in battle. The second one by Rani Karnavati, when the reigning Rana Sanga faced defeat.

The walls of every architectural marvels in India shouts out loud, numerous stories witnessed by the walls, and if "Walls have Ears" then walls will tell stories of nationalism, bravery and dedication that may consume the whole life of a human. So, to understand yourself, you should go into your history and experience it.
